Broken garage door spring replacement

Snapped garage door spring? Torsion and extension springs replaced in matched pairs, usually the same day. Southern Gold Coast, 8am–9pm daily.

Open · 8am–9pm

A garage door spring does the heavy lifting. A typical double door weighs far more than anyone should try to lift, and the springs carry that weight so the opener, or your arms, only have to guide it. When a spring snaps, the door's full weight is suddenly unbalanced.

Most people know it's happened because of the noise: a loud bang from the garage, often when nobody was touching the door. After that the door is very heavy, or the opener strains and stops.

When to call us

  • A loud bang from the garage
  • A visible gap in the coil above the door
  • The door feels extremely heavy by hand
  • The opener lifts the door a little and stops
  • Loose or slack cables after the bang

How we do it

  1. Make it safeWe secure the door so it can't drop while we work.
  2. Size the springsSprings are matched to the door's weight and height, not guessed from a catalogue.
  3. Replace in pairsWhere a door has two springs we replace both, because the second is the same age and usually close behind.
  4. Re-balance and testWe set the tension so the door holds still at half height, then test the opener and safety reverse.

Near the beach?

Springs rust from the outside in, and a rusty coil is a weaker coil. Near the beach we fit coated springs and suggest a light silicone spray every few months.

Broken spring replacement questions

Can I open the door with a broken spring?

Please don't. Lifting it by hand or running the motor puts all the weight on the cables and opener, and the door can drop. Leave it closed and call us.

Why replace both springs if only one broke?

They were installed together and have done the same number of cycles. Replacing both gives balanced lift and saves a second call-out soon after.

How long does a spring replacement take?

Usually about an hour or two on site, depending on the door.

What's your door doing?

Pick the closest match for the likely cause, whether it's safe to use, and the usual fix.

Won't open or close

Check the power point and the remote battery first. If the motor runs but the door doesn't move, a spring or cable has probably failed.

Right now
Don't force it open by hand.
Usual fix
Spring, cable or motor repair, usually on the first visit.
